Blog Post #5: The MegaCepts Process Steps

Studies confirm that despite the importance of thinking and the brain’s powerful ability to think many people do not think effectively and, in many cases, do not think at all. Many people consider that thinking about complex and important topics is both complicated and intimidating, so they choose not to do it, and most people lack an organized, structured process to achieve great thinking.

“There is no expedient to which a man will go to avoid the labor of thinking.” Thomas Edison

The MegaCepts process provides four easy steps that that guide you to define the ten or fewer greatest thoughts on any topic. These steps are: 1. Initial ideas, 2. Socialized ideas, 3. Research ideas, and 4. Final MegaCepts list.

“A man that does not think for himself does not think at all.” Oscar Wilde

The most important reason that people do not think effectively is because they lack discipline and an organized, structured way to think. The MegaCepts process provides both discipline and structure, resulting in greater thinking and, when needed, greater decision-making.

An Overview of the Four-Step MegaCepts Process

The MegaCepts process provides a step-by-step approach to establish the most relevant greatest thoughts on any topic. As a reminder, while you can apply the MegaCepts process to think about virtually any topic under the sun (such as gravity), the process has the most impact and power when you apply it in your personal and professional life.

The MegaCepts process has four steps:

  1. Initial ideas: Write down what you think are the most important concepts of a specific topic that you want to learn more about, especially if you need to make a decision on the topic. This step is essential, since it motivates and disciplines you to capture your initial thoughts on a topic before seeking input from others. This step reflects the starting point, or baseline, in your thinking about the topic. It’s useful and enlightening to compare your initial ideas to your final MegaCepts list.
  2. Socialized ideas: Without sharing your work, ask two or three friends, family members, or colleagues to offer their most important concepts on the topic. Once you discuss the topic with two or three other people, you will all understand it much better.
  3. Research ideas: Once you have established your own ideas and socialized ideas, complement these with focused, high-level research. Do an internet search for articles and research that deal specifically with your topic.
  4. Your MegaCepts list: Based on your initial ideas, the social input you received, and your further research, go back to your initial list of ideas and refine it to establish your own greatest thoughts on the topic, your MegaCepts. This final step in the process will provide a surprising amount of insight and clarity!

The key to the MegaCepts process is that it facilitates and emphasizes your ability to think about and process information rather than just read or hear information and then simply remember it. As you learn more about the process, you will understand how it positively forces you to think and empowers you to make better decisions.

Thinking—the heart of the MegaCepts process—is one of the most important human capabilities in life for all individuals in every facet of our society including, of course, all governments and institutions. As I stated above, most people do not think effectively and, in many cases, do not think at all. That is, we repeat what we read or hear. This lack of thinking negatively impacts our success, happiness, and fulfillment.

People who think effectively generally do it in a more organized and structured way, and the MegaCepts process provides a powerful way to accomplish that, from the simplest topics and subjects to the most complex and technical. You will find that:

  • Great thinking, which enables better leadership decision-making, produces more successful, happier, and fulfilled people.
  • Applying the principles of my Mega Thinking book will lead to this great thinking and better leadership decision-making.
